Meet the beautiful reserve of Sian Ka'an

Although it is well known that the Mexican Caribbean has vast natural areas and beaches that are still fairly virgin, there is a gem that not everyone knows: the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve.

It is the largest protected area in southeastern Mexico, and has the hallmark of Unesco biosphere reserve, since in its nearly 650 thousand hectares comprising beaches, mangroves, dunes, cenotes, coral reefs and a tropical rainforest, it combines biological diversity with cultural richness.

The biosphere reserve was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1987.

They live here 300 species of birds; 100 mammals and four other endangered species: the jaguar, tapir, manatee and peccary. Not to mention that on its shores is the second largest coral reef in the world, where hundreds of marine animals hide.

Sian Ka'an means “where the sky is born” in Maya, and its vast territory is divided into three zones: core, which is the most protected because of its importance in the ecosystem and its fragility; damping and transition, these last two are possible to access and in fact, there are some activities.

What to do in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve?

In the reserve there are about 23 archaeological zones, of which you can visit Muyil, an ancient Mayan city of the late postclassic period.

In addition, there are nearby communities with guides of Mayan origin, who will guide you and lead you to perform various activities such as tour the turquoise water canals, go boating through the mangroves, learn to make chewing gum and handmade textiles, among others.

You can also do a jeep expedition through the jungle, swim on its white sand beaches, enter by boat and snorkel in the part of the barrier reef that belongs to Mexico.

  • There are 5 tickets but the most common is Tulum, in any of them you must pay 50 Mexican pesos to enter.
  • We recommend that you hire an excursion to get lost in the jungle and discover the jewels and secrets it hides.
  • Go with tennis and comfortable clothes
  • Wear swimsuit
  • If you want to visit the reef, you are likely to be asked not to use sunscreen or any product to avoid damaging the ecosystem

Sian Ka'an is just over an hour from Tulum blue taking the Chetumal-Cancún highway.
